Short version: your screenshots, and the text inside them, never leave your Mac. ShotJar has no account, no analytics and no crash reporting. It talks to the internet for two things only, an update check and a license check, and neither carries any of your screenshots or their text. (The website is covered separately, below.)
This page is written to be checkable. You can verify every claim on it by watching the app's network traffic with a tool such as Little Snitch.
What stays on your Mac
- Your screenshots. ShotJar reads the folder macOS saves screenshots to (and any other folder you add in Settings). It never moves, edits, copies or deletes those files, and it never uploads them.
- The text inside them. Text is recognized on your Mac by Apple's Vision framework, the same on-device text recognition macOS itself uses. The recognized text is kept in memory while the app runs, so you can search it, and is not written to disk. It is recognized again the next time the app starts.
- Your settings, such as watched folders, the keyboard shortcut and the look of the shelf, in
~/Library/Preferences/app.shotjar.ShotJar.plist. Your license key, once you enter one, is stored there too. - The trial record, which notes when your 14-day trial started, in
~/Library/Application Support/ShotJar/,~/Library/Caches/app.shotjar.ShotJar/and the preferences file above. - Diagnostic messages. Like most Mac apps, ShotJar writes short status messages to the macOS system log on your Mac. These can include screenshot file names. They stay on your Mac. A separate log file in
~/Library/Logs/ShotJar/is written only if you turn on debug logging, which we would ask you to do only while helping you with a problem, and you choose whether to send it to us.
One setting changes something outside ShotJar: Hide native screenshot thumbnail (Settings › Folders) switches off the floating preview macOS shows after each capture. It does this by changing the macOS screenshot setting itself, so it stays off until you switch it back on, there or with ⌘⇧5 › Options › Show Floating Thumbnail.
What leaves your Mac
ShotJar makes exactly two kinds of connection on its own.
1. Update checks: shotjar.app
About twice a day, and when you click Check Now…, the app downloads a small list of available versions from https://shotjar.app/updates/appcast.xml. The request carries the app's name and version, and the version of the update software it uses, in its User-Agent header. Nothing else: the update software's optional "system profile" (Mac model, macOS version and similar) is switched off in ShotJar. If you choose to install an update, the app downloads it from the same place.
Our server counts these checks the same way it counts website downloads (see "The website", below): a timestamp, a one-way hash of your IP address, the User-Agent, and the country and network Cloudflare places the request in. That is how we know roughly how many copies are in use.
You can turn automatic checks off in Settings › General. Updates install only when you choose to.
2. License checks: api.lemonsqueezy.com
Lemon Squeezy, which sells ShotJar licenses for us, also runs the service that checks them.
- When you activate a license, the app sends your license key and this Mac's name (the computer name set in System Settings › General › Sharing). The name is there so that you can tell your Macs apart when you manage your seats. If you would rather not share it, change the computer name before you activate.
- Each time the app starts, it re-checks the key, sending the key and the activation ID Lemon Squeezy issued for this Mac.
- When you click Deactivate This Mac, it sends the same two things, to free the seat.
None of these requests contains a screenshot, recognized text or file name. The check fails open: if Lemon Squeezy cannot be reached, ShotJar keeps working. Only a definite answer that the key is no longer valid, for example after a refund, changes anything. During the free trial no license check is made at all.
Links you click
The Buy a license buttons open shotjar.app/pricing in your web browser. From there, the website's own policy below applies.
Nothing else
There are no analytics, no telemetry and no crash reports. They are not switched off by default; they were never written. The practical consequence is that we do not know which features you use, what you search for, or when the app crashes. If ShotJar misbehaves, please tell us (see Contact).
Purchases
Lemon Squeezy is the merchant of record for ShotJar: they sell you the license, take payment, handle sales tax and VAT, and send your receipt. They see your payment details under their own privacy policy. We receive what is needed to issue and support your license: your name, email address, country, the order, and the license key. We use it only to support your purchase and answer your messages. We never sell it or use it for marketing.
The website
shotjar.app is a website, not the app, and its footprint is separate:
- Hosting. The site is hosted by Cloudflare. As with any website, your browser's requests, including your IP address, reach Cloudflare's servers so that the pages can be delivered. The site loads no third-party scripts or fonts and runs no page-view analytics. Its only cookie is described next.
- Download counting. When you download ShotJar (any
shotjar.app/downloadlink) and when the app checks for updates, our server records: the time, a one-way hash of your IP address combined with the date and a secret key, your browser's User-Agent, the country and network (internet provider number) Cloudflare places the request in, how much of the file was sent, the website that linked you to the download (only its host name, such aswww.reddit.com), and, for links likeshotjar.app/download/reddit, the last part of the link, which tells us which post or listing you came from. Such a link takes you to the home page and sets one cookie,sj_src, that holds only that word (for examplereddit) for 30 days, so a download you start from the home page afterwards is credited to that post. It holds nothing about you, is never shared, and you can delete it any time in your browser. Your raw IP address is never stored. Because the hash includes the date, it cannot be used to follow anyone from one day to the next; it only lets us avoid counting the same download twice in a day. We use this to count downloads and see which places send people to ShotJar, nothing else. These records are deleted after 13 months. - The notify-me form. The "Need another platform?" form asks for a name, an email address and the platforms you need. Those fields are sent only when you submit the form. They are stored with Cloudflare and forwarded to our inbox for one purpose: emailing you if ShotJar comes to a platform you asked for. No newsletter, no sharing, no resale. To have your entry deleted, write to us.
- Checkout. The Buy buttons open Lemon Squeezy's checkout, which is their site under their privacy policy.
When you write to support@shotjar.app, your message arrives in our support inbox, which is hosted by Google (Gmail). We use what you send only to answer you and fix what you report, and we delete it on request.
Your choices and rights
The app holds nothing about you on our side, so there is nothing to export or delete there. To remove everything ShotJar keeps on your Mac, follow the uninstall steps on the support page.
For anything we do hold (purchase records, emails, a notify-me entry), you can ask us to show it to you, correct it or delete it, by writing to support@shotjar.app. Purchase records that tax law requires to be kept are kept by Lemon Squeezy as the seller. You also have whatever rights the privacy law where you live gives you, and we will honour them.
Children
ShotJar is not directed at children and collects nothing from anyone, so nothing is collected from children either.
Changes
If a future version of the app ever sends anything new anywhere, this page will say so plainly before that version ships, and the change will be in the release notes. The date at the top shows when this page last changed.
